HP LaserJet Pro M225dw Multifunction Printer

HP LaserJet Pro M225dw Highlights -

Pros: Quick and good quality prints. Duplex printing.

Cons: Above average printing cost per page. Touchscreen not responsive at times.

HP revolutionized laser printing technology in 1984 with it's first LaserJet - a fast and reliable printer that was intended for mass-market sales. However, they were too expensive to be used as personal printers. Since then the line between inkjet and laser printers has blurred. Laser printers still cost a little bit more than inkjet printers but in the long run they offer better value for money. Toner powder is cheap and lasts a long time, while an expensive ink cartridge can be used up quickly. That's why in an office environment, a laser printer is a perfect choice as it brings the overall printing cost down and is considered to be a "work horse" due to it's speed and efficiency. Nowadays many home users prefer a laser printer as well for these same qualities.
The HP LaserJet Pro M225dw is one such laser printer that is specifically designed to cater for small business printing needs. Not only it is an efficient printer, it can copy, scan and send/receive faxes too. It is a mid-range model from the HP LaserJet Pro family of printers that falls between the M125nw, which lacks fax capability and touchscreen display and the M425dw which supports higher-capacity paper tray and faster print speeds. The M225dw is a monochrome laser printer with an advertised print speed of 26 pages per minute (ppm) which means that the printer can only print in black and white. If you're looking for a color laser printer, please read our review of the Brother HL-L8350CDW wireless color laser printer. The M225dw offers features and functionality that you would expect in a small office environment with automatic two-sided printing, an intuitive touchscreen for simple access to control options, easy wireless connectivity, built-in networking, security features and mobile printing options.
The build quality of the M225dw monochrome printer is pretty good for the price and with the dimension of 16 x 17.4 x 14.6 inches the printer takes some desk space. The printer also features a paper tray for paper feed that extends out of the main body from the bottom front of the printer and doesn't retract. The tray is capable of holding up to 250 sheets of A4 paper. Also, there is a 10 sheet priority tray and 35 sheet automatic document feeder. In addition, the M225dw features a 3 inch color LCD touchscreen display for faster, simpler and more convenient access to common office tasks. However, at times the touch functionality didn't seem too responsive. The printer can be connected to a PC via a USB connection, Ethernet or Wi-Fi and there is also a USB 2.0 port for direct printing via a USB thumb drive. The printer supports wireless printing plus Wi-Fi Direct for direct printing without a network. Apart from capability to print from smartphones and tablets, the printer supports Apple AirPrint and HP ePrint wireless printing. Overall the printer is simple to setup and easy to use.

The printer is quick and prints close to the advertised print speed of 26 ppm. It is also reasonably quiet during printing. The print quality is decent and the printer reproduces text and picture details with consistent quality. The scan and copy speed is equally good, however the output quality is average at best. Overall, we think the speed and print quality is more than adequate for a small home office of approx. 5-10 users. As far as the printing cost is concerned, the standard toner cartridge will last about 1,500 pages, which gives it a per page cost of 3.9 cents. Ideally, a black and white page should cost less than 3 cents, so this printer has a bit higher per page cost than average. Nevertheless, it will make for a good laser printer if your printing needs are not much. The M225dw also has an in-built security feature that securely stores print jobs and only prints when needed via the secure authentication, built onto the printer. In addition, the printer is energy efficient with it's auto on/off feature that turns the printer on when it’s needed and off when it isn’t. The printer measures 16 x 17.4 x 14.6 inches and weighs 21.1 pounds.

ReviewsBucket's Verdict:
The HP LaserJet Pro M225dw is perfect for a small business with approx. 5-10 users. The print speed and quality is decent with paper saving auto duplex printing. The wireless functionality is great and the printer is easy to setup. Even though the scanning/copying is pretty average, it is good enough for office use. The printer has a couple of drawbacks, such as it's fiddly touchscreen and somewhat high printing cost per page. Nevertheless, we recommend this printer for it's decent set of features and functionality with a modest price tag.
