Brother DCP-L2540DW Highlights -
Pros: Fast printing. Good quality text.
Cons: Color printing not supported.
Choosing the right printer, whether it be for a small office or occasional printing at home is not as easy as it sounds. The most important things to look for when considering a printer is the build quality, reliability, quality of print outs and the cost of printing. After all the last thing you want when making a dash for your last minute presentation is a broken printer or worst still, running out of ink. Also, printers are not like most other technology. They don't need to be replaced quite as often. You'll probably replace your laptop or a tablet after a couple years, but as long as the printer does it's job there's no need to replace it. This makes choosing the right printer even more difficult as you would want to get it right the first time.
Brother DCPL2540DW multifunction laser printer is one such printer which we believe will be great for a small to medium sized business as it aims to deliver speed, convenience, reliability and savings. It is an affordable monochrome laser multifunction printer that can print and copy up to 30 ppm (pages per minute) with automatic duplex printing capability. It can also scan colored documents. The printer is quite compact with up to a 250 sheet capacity tray and up to a 35 page ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) for quick copy and scans. Apart from wired network connectivity for sharing the printer with multiple users, it also features a built-in wireless 802.11b/g/n for wireless printing. This makes it really convenient for users to print wirelessly from their mobile devices like smart phones or a tablet via AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Brother iPrint&Scan, Cortado Workplace and Wi-Fi Direct. In addition, scanned documents can be sent wirelessly to a mobile device with the Brother iPrint&Scan mobile app.
Brother DCPL2540DW produces professional looking output with a maximum resolution of up to 2400x600 dpi. Both text and images appear clear and crisp. The resolution can be set to 300, 600, and 1200 dpi. The print speed is as advertised (30 ppm). However, it will be a bit slower when printing on both sides. There is also a 'Toner Save' option that uses significantly less ink. Scanning and copying speed is reasonably fast too with good quality output and includes a variety of options for sending scanned documents including: e-mail, file, image, OCR and SharePoint (PC). The included toner cartridge can be replaced with either TN630 (max yield approximately 1200 pages) or TN660 (max yield approximately 2600 pages) cartridges, both of which are very reasonably priced.

The printer is well-built but some users may find the plastic body to be a bit fragile. As mentioned, the printer comes with a starter toner cartridge, but not a USB cable. The printer also features a two-line LCD display control panel with labelled buttons. The printer measures 15.7 x 16.1 x 12.5 inches and weighs 24.5 pounds.
Brother DCPL2540DW is a solid performer where text output is the primary need. It is ideal for home-office or small business use. As well as a printing speed of around 30 ppm, the printer is capable of scanning and copying documents reliably with good print quality. We think this printer is great value for money.
